 Government Maps in Garmin Format

Just found this on the web. This guy in Alberta has converted the government issue maps to garmin format for the whole COUNTRY.

These multicoloured maps can be installed and viewed using Mapsource, and even downloaded to your Garmin Map enabled GPS.

I prefer them over the Garmin Topo maps because they use colours and symbols to differentiate between bog and forest. The railbed is there too, something not displayed using Garmin Topo.

The guy is providing them for FREE but lets be generous and make a small donation for all his hard work if you choose to download the file. He has a link on his site for donations.

Here is the website for the download....

http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo

It is a large file (3Gb) and took me about 2hrs 45min on a cable connection to download.

Just downloaded some of these maps onto my GPS (Garmin GPSMap 60C) .

They look great!

UPDATE:

After spending some time with the new maps, I have made a couple of observations.

Again, the display is great and I will stick with these maps on my GPS. However, for fans of "auto-routing" or automatic route generation (on roads/highways), these maps don't support it. This won't affect your self made trail or snowmobile routes.

The only other issue is that lakes, ponds, and rivers are not named as they are in Garmin Topo. A way around that, assuming you had the waypoint capacity on your GPS to do so, is to just plank down a waypoint on each Lake, pond, etc in your area and name the waypoint for that body of water.

Happy Mapping

Problems with Software?????

Likely not the Software but me. I downloaded this file (took 5 hrs) and unzipped it. I couldnt open Mapsource afterwards. I think I MAY have downloaded the wrong file.

I picked the Download called:

http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/IbycusTopo21iso.zip (3.03GB - Suitable for burning to DVD)

whereas I think I should have chosen the second one.

http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/IbycusTopo21.zip (3.03GB - If you don't have a DVD burner or don't know what an ISO is)

I had to uninstall Mapsource afterwords and then reinstall it. I will post back on my results.

[b]UPDATE: Well, it wasnt me after all. once I downloaded the second file, all worked perfect. Great Topo's[ and thanks GTX/b]

Once it says install complete, it's done. The installation actually integrates the Ibycus maps into mapsource.

Just open mapsource, and at the top you will see a dropdown menu, which gives you a choice of which mapset you would like to display. When you start Mapsource, and if you had Garmin Topo before, it probably says Canada Topo in the box.

Open the drop menu, and you will see a mapset called Ibycus Topo 2.1. Select it and Mapsource will display the Ibycus Topo maps in the main display. They now work like the Garmin maps, were you can use the map tool to select sections and download them to your GPS.

And something else to add. When MS opens up, choose the " Highest"in the Map Detail window. (Just to the Left of the upload from GPS Icon) You can see the Green Topo from well out to 3 mile offset. Looks great and easier when plotting routes. Great Job on this one Captain V

Thats a good question. The only thing I can think of is that your IP connection settings may have a cap on the size of file you can download. I suggest to either check your settings or chat to your Internet Provider for help.
